On Strange Grounds explores the gaze on the cultural otherness in the medium of the snapshot photography. Where does my eyes get fix on, when I do not understand the cultural meanings of the things I see? Could I see the world as nothing but colours and shapes? From minute fragments of information, the mind constructs desperate interpretations, although I can see their fictive quality. The exhibition consists of photographic series shot between 2 April and 27 October 2009 in Japan, commented by my Japanese friends, photographers Seiji Mizuno and Hatsumi Mizuno, and a diptych video installation, shot on the 8mm film, that studies the poetics of Butoh dance.
