I recognize the lion
Jouko Turkka (1942-2016) was one of the most influental auteur-director and pedagogist of the finnish theater in the 20th. century. From the year 2004 until the death he concentrated on excavation of his home yard in Sotaplassi, Pirkkala. He unearthed enormous amount of stones and surfaces of the rock. Stones and forms were the datum for his observation on the people, who lived there before the latest glacial period. Throught the stone-figures he made interpretations on the people's manners, their living conditions and beliefs. The stone people's sense of shape, social structures and values challenges the modern vision and recognized historical narrations. The exhibition that included my documentary film, collections of stones and photos of stones taken by Jouko Turkka, was kept in the Academy of Arts Exhibition Laboratory in Jan. of 2014. T artistic team of the exhibition included Jouko Turkka, Esa Kirkkopelto, Pekka Kantonen and Jaakko Ruuska. The film was shot in June of 2012.
